Over the past few years, as a proud 4-H member, I have had the opportunity to travel across our country meeting Canadian youth who share a passion for agriculture.
Therefore, I know I am not alone when I express my surprise at comments made by federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-food, Lawrence MacAulay, in the House of Commons this past week. On several occasions, I have met the minster, a strong representative of many issues of concern to his constituents of Cardigan. However, the idea that farmers support a carbon tax, resulting in an increase on every input needed to run their businesses is out of touch and a misrepresentation of our industry. In addition, the lack of response to these misleading comments by our provincial minister and the premier is disappointing and yet another characteristic of a tired government.
Young farmers are in need of government leadership on agricultural policy which has a direct impact at farm-gate; not an increase in taxes. Young farmers, like the generations before them, will continue to embrace innovation and new ideas which will positively impact the environment and ensure the sustainability of the industry into the future. Young farmers are ready and eager to meet the challenges ahead to feed our families, our communities, and our country.
