I am currently writing a book on the mammals of P.E.I. In the winters of 2013 and 2014, when I still worked for the province, I took many phone calls from people reporting bats that were flying about in broad daylight in freezing temperatures.

Many dead bats that were collected and submitted to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative at AVC were determined to suffer from the deadly fungal disease, white-nose syndrome. Curiously, no bats were reported or collected from west of Travellers Rest in these years.

I wonder if anyone in Summerside or further west actually saw winter-flying bats but did not report them.

I would be glad to hear of these and can be reached at 902-569-1209. Any active bat colonies are also of interest.

Rosemary Curley,

Stratford
