COLUMN: Everybody worships

“And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us ...” (Exodus 32:1a)

This is very revealing about the nature of man and the greatest choice that stands before every human being, the choice of worship. Will we worship the one true God revealed in the Bible or will we be corrupted with idolatry. There is no other choice.

The big deception of the day is that one can opt for having no worship at all, the pretended basis of secularism. However, a little thought convinces us that secularism is only a disguised system of impure worship. Man is by constitution, most essentially, a worshipper. He was made originally to relate first to his Creator. In fact, before there was even an Adam and Eve, there was an Adam and God.

For man to be able to be at home in this Earth, he was given a physical body and endowed with five senses. To be able to relate to other human beings man was given a social nature. But to relate to God, Adam was made a spiritual being – created to worship.

To deny man’s spiritual constitution is to willfully ignore the evidence of thousands of years of human behaviour. People perform acts of worship because they are religious by nature. Though man has fallen into a sinful estate and his worship life has been corrupted, it is still there. This is true of every person, notwithstanding claims to the contrary.

Professing that you are not intellectual cannot keep you from thinking, and professing you are not emotional cannot stop you from feeling for the simple reason that you are made that way. In the same way you may profess not to be religious, but you cannot dismantle your own religious constitution.

Not being involved in organized religion or religious ordinances cannot change you either. There is an inner life of worship in the sanctuary of the heart that is always active. Denying the existence of God and professing atheism cannot change you from being a worshipper.

The issue is not if you worship but who you worship. Jesus Christ came to restore our worship life and reconnect us to God. Only through Him can we find our true purpose of being and know personally the blessing of God.
