SUMMERSIDE – Barb Broome wants to help young women find their confidence.
Broome, the executive director of the East Prince Youth Development Centre, has organized a Women of Worth event that will feature a keynote speaker, discussions, and activities to promote hope for moving forward through life’s experiences.
“One thing we work on before employability is making sure our clients believe in themselves and feel confident in their abilities. If you don’t take care of yourself it will be just as hard to take care of others.
“And we’ve wanted to work on that by holding an event that focuses on the stories of young women too. Now it’s like it’s all come together. I wanted a day where the young women attending could have a minute to slow down and take care and focus of themselves.”
Broome said she hopes the event will also allow the attendees to find their voices.
“It’s a stepping stone. It may be a reminder to keep going, that they are worthy of their dreams, while it may also show them the reality that everyone has issues and barriers they have to overcome. It’s a matter of giving them hope.”
Norma McColeman, the speaker at the event, agreed.
“We all have realities of life, that’s one thing I want to touch on.”
McColeman recently started a business, which focuses on lifestyle coaching, motivational speaking, workshops, and retreats as well as offering support and referrals for victims of abuse and domestic violence.
“Barb provided me with a list topics she wanted to be addressed during the session and I’ve done my best to formulated discussions about them.”
The session will centre on connecting self-esteem with employability and empowerment.
“I’ve compiled personal stories from my own experience as well as that of some of my past clients that can apply to this theme,” said McColeman.
Broome and McColeman hope the stories and discussions will resonate with the women attending the event.
“It’s really special to see that ‘aha’moment some people have when they realize they are capable of reaching their goals and dreams and overcoming barriers,” said Broome.
To attend the Nov. 29 Women of Worth event, preregistration is required.
The session runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene in Summerside (156 Fitzroy Street). Those wishing to attend must be between the ages of 18 to 35 years old.
