Tignish’s first year as a town was a profitable one. According to financial statements presented during its annual budget meeting Monday, the town turned in an operating surplus of $32,843 for the year ended December 31. Tack on capital assistance provided through government assistance and the surplus actually swells to $125,609.

Finance chair and deputy mayor Angel Murphy brought down a balanced 15-month budget to take the town through to March 31, 2019. It projects revenues and expenditures even at $687,117.50, achievable without changing the municipal tax rates which stay at 62 cents per $100 assessment for non-commercial property and an even dollar for commercial property. Municipal taxes, in the amount of $361,485, account for 52 per cent of the town’s projected 15-month revenue stream.
