CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - Hal Perry got close to the answer he wanted during Thursday’s question period.

The Liberal MLA for Tignish-Palmer Road questioned government on operational funding for the Tignish Health Centre.

In 2012, the centre began receiving yearly operational funding from government to help alleviate some of the pressure on the volunteers.

Perry wanted to know if the Tignish Health Centre would once again receive funding for the 2017 year.

Health and Wellness Minister Robert Henderson said when it comes to rural health centres, the Tignish Health Centre is an “unbelievably fantastic model”.

“They do a really good collaborative care model when it comes to physicians, physiotherapists, public health nurses and the list goes on,” said Henderson.

“We have received a request from the Tignish Health Centre for funding again this year and we are putting together the treasury board memo to make that happen as soon as possible.”

However, Perry pushed Henderson for a more definitive date.

“We would be hopeful that through that process (treasury board memo) we will see the funding be granted and hopefully that funding will be commenced by at least by year-end,” said Henderson.

The Tignish Health Centre has been operating for close to 45 years, providing essential care to those within the community.

Volunteers within the community have financially funded the centre since it’s inception, but it became increasingly difficult to meet the demands as time went on.
