For the next couple of weeks, Gracie Greenan will be a little bit Czech, while her classmate, Elizabeth Smith, will be a wee part American.

The Grade 6 Parkside Elementary students in Summerside have been assigned countries to keep a close eye on during the Pyeongchang Olympic Games in South Korea.

“It’s great when the Olympics are on because when you get home from school you want to watch them,” said Gracie.

“It’s just cool to go and watch Canada compete.”

A large section of one of the walls in the school’s foyer has been designated to help keep track of each country’s medal count.

To help mark Friday’s opening of the Games, the school held its own opening ceremonies in the gym. Each class got decked out in their country’s flags and cultural items and marched around. Representatives from each ‘nation’ also gave a few facts about their country.

Hometown hero Heather Moyse was also a popular subject. The kids watched a short video about the two-time Olympic gold medalist, who is competing in her fourth Games in Pyeongchang.

“I think she’s a really good influence and she inspires me a lot to try different sports and always try my best,” said Elizabeth.

“She always tries – sometimes she doesn’t win – but she always keeps going.”
