Supervillain the Riddler, Cory Thomas, left, the Flash, Dylan Thomas, 5, a witch, Kayla Thomas, 8, a cat, Charlie Raynor, 6, and a panda, Aria Tran, 4, right. The family came out to celebrate the event ‘Witches on Water Street’ and show their support to local businesses in Downtown.

It was the fifth year for the popular event, which had zombies, skeletons, ghosts, monsters, superheroes and more, being welcomed into 25 local businesses and restaurants while handing out candy to young and old dressed in costume.

Manager of Sheens for Shoes, Erica Bryant said this is a fun annual community event.

“We wanted to participate for the kids,” smiled Bryant while handing out candies to children. “And we’ve seen a good hundred walk through the doors so far.”

The event is an initiative of the Downtown Summerside Inc. and Spotlight Theatre Company, which had a team of students and locals volunteering.

Owner of the Spotlight Theatre Company, Reesha Walsh, said the idea is for the kids.

“We have local businesses offering candy, the kids are going in trick-or-treating, and on top of that we are doing a section of mini games – pumpkin painting, costume contest, and scavenger hunt for the witch,” explained Walsh.

Angel Jansen came dressed as Dracula, and brought her two (zombie) children, Ivory, 12, and Drake, 15, to trick-or-treat.

“We love Halloween, and we celebrate it as much as we can,” laughed Jansen, while removing her fake fangs. Her daughter, Ivory, who was dressed as a “zombie prom queen” ended up winning an award at the costume contest.

Other costume contest winners included, Alienna Gallant, 5, wearing a “boo-tiful” butterfly costume, and Max Perry, 2, dressed as a horse.

Cory Thomas, who came dressed as supervillain, the Riddler said this is a great event to show your support to local business.

“We love Halloween at our house and we enjoy supporting the Downtown local businesses – whether it be the local stores or restaurants.” Thomas continued, “So we decided it was a great opportunity to come down today and show our support.”
