Terrible driving conditions caused by the sudden appearance of deep drifts from drifting snow over ice caused hundreds of cars to end up in ditches across the Island early today.

Now, however, the temperature has risen to +2C over most of the Island, +3 in Prince County.

As predicted, wind has increased and is currently gusting over 100 kilometers per hour on Confederation Bridge.

It is now restricting high-sided vehicles from going across the bridge.

It expects the restriction to be in place for most of the day.

Today is calling for temperatures to rise to +4C by noon, up to +5 by late afternoon.

That is forecast to bring periods of rain between noon and 3 p.m., but then the sun should start to poke out as clear skies set in by around 5 p.m. today.

Wind is expected to get slightly stronger from the southeast with gusts to 70.

The temperature is expected to fall to –2 tonight.

Thursday is expected to bring roughly the same conditions as today, with temperatures maybe rising to +5, showers in the afternoon and gusty south winds.

The same again for the third day in a row Friday but then overnight Friday Environment Canada predicts that the temperature will plummet to –16, then only reach –12 for Saturday’s high.
