A passerby found the man and called police around 1 a.m.
When police arrived the man, who was in his early 20s, was in the manhole above his head.
“He was in feet-first, but completely down the manhole, like bellow ground,” said Cpl. Jason Blacquiere.
A couple of officers managed to get a hold of the man and haul him back up onto the sidewalk.
The man appeared uninjured. A relative was contacted and came to pick him up.
What is unclear is how the man ended up in that situation.
Manhole covers are heavy and usually require something to be hooked into them before they can removed, said Blacquiere.
“Did he open it himself or was it already open for some reason? We don’t know. He was intoxicated and a little bit sheepish by the time we found him, so he was claiming he didn’t really know what had happened,” he added.
The investigating officers will be following up to see if they can shed a little more light on the situation.
