UPDATED: Some 13,000 homes now without power

Maritime Electric now says there are 13,000 homes without power.

Communities involved include: Sherbrooke to the Western end of the Island, Wood Islands, Panmure, Murray River, High Bank, and surrounding areas.

The company has said that lines are slapping together and winds are expected to pick up, so the Island could be in for more outages throughout today and tonight.

Maritime Electric now reports that there are 5,000 homes on the Island without power, most in Prince County.

There are about 20 Maritime Electric crews working on the outages.

The highest number of homes without power, about 8,500, occurred around noon today.

Ice build up and high winds snapping utility poles caused most of the damage.

The areas most severely impacted are O'Leary, Fortune Cove, Ellerslie Biddeford, Tyne Valley, Lennox Island, West Point, Tignish and surrounding communities.

WOODSTOCK - West Prince RCMP are advising motorists of several roads currently closed due to downed power lines and poor conditions, awaiting the arrival of Maritime Electric.

Both Route 143 in Forestview, and Route 12 in Seacow Pond are shut down due to power lines which have been downed by the build up of ice and freezing rain.  Maritime Electric is responding with crews to fix the issue.

Also several lines have been knocked down in the Woodstock area around Route 2.

Motorists are once again advised to stay off roads unless it's an emergency, because of the slush, ice, and freezing rain conditions making many roads unsafe to drive.
