SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — A car fire closed Water Street East in Summerside temporarily on Wednesday afternoon as firefighters extinguished the blaze.
Summerside Fire Chief Ron Enman said the driver was travelling East on Water Street East when he noticed smoke coming in the air vents. He opened the glove box and there was smoke there, too.
“By the time he got out of the vehicle, it was close to fully engulfed,” said Enman.
A large black band of scorched paint crossed the engine bonnet of the car on the side of the road Wednesday. The windows were all missing and the interior was reduced to metal by the time the fire was out.
It’s not the first car to catch fire on Island roads in recent days.
“I’ve been doing this for 25 years. It happens,” said Enman.
“It’s probably electrical. Anyway, it’s unfortunate.”
No one was injured, but the driver said he was "shaken up, for sure".
