TIGNISH

The final regular season game of the West Prince Senior Hockey League marks the start of the 32nd annual Tignish Silver Fox Winter Carnival.

The Tignish Senior Aces will play host to the Tyne Valley Tornadoes Saturday at 7:45 p.m. at the Tignish Credit Union Arena.

The game is important to both teams as Tignish can move into a second-place tie with the Alberton Regals with a win while Tornadoes win would enable them to nail down the fourth and final playoff spot.

The Silver Fox Winter Carnival runs until the following Saturday, Feb. 24. Throughout Winter Carnival week the Recreation Department will be posting clues on its Facebook page as to the hiding place of the Silver Fox. Guesses cost two dollars, but the first person with the right answer wins $50.

Recreation director Sam Arsenault invites families within the 882- dialing exchange to start working on a winter carnival snow sculpture. Judging takes place on Feb. 20 but entries must be pre-registered by Feb 19.The Tignish Co-op and Home Hardware are sponsoring the contest and will award the first–place winner with a plaque and $200 worth of oil. Second place winner gets $100 worth of oil.

Other activities taking place during the winter carnival are the 26th annual Don Gaudet Memorial Snowmobile and ATV Poker Run this Sunday with registration at the legion at noon, a full afternoon and evening of activities in Bicentennial Park on Monday, Super Hero-Disney Day a four-course meal at Heritage Inn on Feb. 21 (tickets must be pre-booked at the rec office), Karaoke Feb. 21 at the Legion and a best chiard (rapure) contest at Tignish Co-op on February 23. Chiard entries must be at the Co-op for judging by 5:30 p.m.

Hockey serves as the start of the winter carnival and it will bring the winter carnival to an end, too. The Summerside Western Capitals are moving their Maritime Junior Hockey League home game against the Truro Bearcats on Feb. 24 to the Tignish Credit Union Arena, home arena of the Caps and MHL’s leading scorer, TJ Shea. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Caps are currently in second place in the North Division while the Bearcats hold down fourth place in the south division.
