The officers, Cst. Mike Jones, Cst. Ricky MacLeod and Cst. Travis Turner, all recently left their employment in Summerside for new opportunities with the Cape Breton Regional Police Force. All three are originally from Cape Breton.
Turner was a part-time officer here and was hired in December, 2014, while MacLeod and Jones were full-time members, hired in February, 2012, and June 2014 respectively. MacLeod and Jones had also previously been part-time officers starting in November, 2011 and September 2013.
Cpl. Jennifer Driscoll of the Summerside Police Service said it is an oddity for the service to lose three officers all at once, especially to have them all heading to the same place.
“It’s not something that would happen regularly,” said Driscoll.
“I think it was just a matter of timing, the Cape Breton Regional Police were hiring at this time, a number of officers, and these guys happened to be from Cape Breton.”
The three officers will be missed, added Driscoll but their former colleagues here wish them luck.
“It’s kind of sad for us, they’re three really great guys,” she added.
Summerside Police Service is currently in the hiring process to refill the positions vacated by the officers.
