Organizers of the Summerside Area Terry Fox Run report their recent event to be the most successful in years.
Jon Cheverie, organizer of the local run, said this year’s event had 75 participants this year and raised a total of $4,400. About $2,200 of that money came directly from pledges and local company MDS Coating agreed to match that amount. The event took place on Sept. 16.
“It was really exciting,” said Cheverie.
“And we’re really excited for next year to and grow this.”
The event’s totals, both in terms of participants and donations, essentially doubled this year.
Cheverie said he is unsure exactly what drove up the numbers this year, but he’s happy it happened.
The run left from Spinnaker’s Landing in Summerside and attracted a few tourists to participate as well.
“It’s just such a good cause. Cancer has touched everybody … and obviously Terry’s story is just incredible. He’s a Canadian hero,” said Cheverie.
The Terry Fox Run is an annual fun run held in various countries around the world in honour of Canadian icon Terry Fox, whose run across Canada for cancer research in the 1980s galvanized the nation.
