Thirteen-year-old Jodi, her younger brother Christian, and their father Jason with the Summerside Fire Department, attended the station’s Open House on Saturday to wrap up Fire Prevention Week.

Children had the opportunity to go inside a smoke house, participate in a youth firefighter and mini firefighter challenge, see a ladder truck and pumper truck display, go for fire truck rides, and more.

Capt. Ron Enman said the open house takes place every two years, and follows the annual Lunch and Learn portion of Fire Prevention Week.

Enman said the program began in 2006, which involves picking children up from the five local elementary schools and taking them to the fire hall to teach them about fire safety and to have a barbeque during that week.

The boys and girls love to go home and tell their families about what they learned, he said.

The open house provides people with information about fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and most importantly to have an escape plan, he added.

“Everyone loves fire trucks and they have a great time.”

Jennifer Stordy, her husband, and three kids were one of many families at the event.

“It’s a family day today,” said Stordy. “The kids really wanted to come to get a ride in the fire truck.”

Her children were part of the Lunch and Learn, and it’s great for them to know how valuable firefighter’s jobs are, she said.

“At a young age, the kids know they volunteer.”

In the event of a fire, the Stordy family is prepared.

“Fire safety is important, and we’ve touched on it at home. The third tree at the end of our driveway is where we’ll meet if we get separated.”
