The Summerside resident got a call from Jane Sharpe, executive director of the Greater Summerside Chamber of Commerce, asking for a hand at the annual Chamber and Rotary Club of Summerside lobster luncheon.

It wasn’t until halfway through the event that Noonan learned she’d been the victim of a ruse.

Little did she know that she’d been selected to receive this year’s Paul Harris Fellowship for the Rotary Club.

“Elizabeth is always willing to lend a helping hand, even today while she’s technically on vacation with her granddaughters, when I manufactured a few jobs for her today and let her know I could use a hand, she readily accepted and brought (the girls) along to help too,” said Sharpe.

The Paul Harris Fellowship is the highest honour handed out annually by Rotary clubs all over the world to recognize individuals for their volunteerism and community building. Each recipient has a $1,000 donation made in their name to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

A visibly moved Noonan thanked the assembly for the award, saying that she was honoured to be included among a group of people whom she’s admired over her career.

“My parents always taught me ‘It’s nice to feel important, but it’s more important to be nice,’” she said, in thanks.

Also handed out Wednesday afternoon was the Chamber of Commerce’s Wendell J. Gallant Scholarship. This year’s recipient Grade 12 student, Samantha Harris, from Three Oaks Senior High.

Harris was recognized for her high academic standards, community leadership, initiative and volunteerism.
