Isabelle McCarville, 13, of Miscouche Consolidated School, couldn’t believe her luck when she made history with her drawing.
“I’m surprised because I was almost 100 per cent sure I would not win the Miscouche Community Flag Design contest,” said McCarville. “I was not even going to enter the competition, but then a teacher persuaded me.”
McCarville’s design features the provincial flower of the Island, a Lady Slipper, St. John the Baptist Church, and a tree.
“We’re very excited to have a community flag from here on end,” said Miscouche Fire Department chief, Jason Woodbury. “And we were pleased with the amount of entries, but unfortunately we could only choose one winner.”
McCarville was presented with a cheque of $1,000 as part of the winning prize.
The community now has the rights to the design, and minor tweaks are being made by a professional before it’s unveiling.
Christina McCarville is still trying to wrap her head around the idea her daughter will be a part of the history of the community.
“We’re very proud, and this is really something we have not quite wrapped our heads around because you don’t expect your child to come home from school and say, guess what I won this huge competition and now I’m going to have this thing that’s essentially part of this community forever.”
After the official ceremony on July 1, the flag will be flown in front of the Miscouche Community Office on Main Drive.
Also in commemoration of the community's 200th anniversary, Silver Maple Seniors Club members James Gaudet, Estelle DesRoches, Julia Albert and Thelma Gaudet have complied a history book highlighting the past and present of Miscouche. This will be launched the following day, July 2, which will be Miscouche Day.
