Sticks, funds, spirits to be raised at hockey tournament honoring Morgen McInnis

WATERVALE, P.E.I. — This year the goal of an annual hockey tournament held in a former Island warehouse is about raising spirits, not just money, for the family of a man killed in a motorcycle collision in the province last year.

“This is a way to remember Morgen (McInnis) and celebrate him…and let Morgen’s family know how many people thought so highly of him,’’ says Steve Walsh.

Walsh and his brothers James and John have organized the Warehouse Cup Hockey Tournament for years.

The pursuit of the Warehouse Cup started in an empty potato warehouse in Watervale roughly 15 years ago.

In recent years, the event has raised funds for good causes like KidSportPEI and Syrian newcomers to the Island.

This year the cause is particular personal for Steve, who like many, were devastated when McInnis, 28, formerly of Earnscliffe, died July 29 following a collision with a car at the intersection of the Fort Augustus and Bunbury roads.

McInnis, who had married Peggy (MacConnell) McInnis just one week before the fatal crash, left behind the couple’s baby boy Blake, and Peggy’s girls, Ava and Maria, who Morgen loved as daughters of his own.

Walsh says all who knew McInnis remember him as a constantly smiling man with a positive outlook.

“He was a very genuine friend,’’ adds Walsh of his former classmate and former hockey teammate.

“What you saw is what you got…just a hard working, honest, loving young man.’’

Donations in support of Peggy McInnis and her children can be made during the tournament, which runs from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Saturday in Watervale.
