The day of activity, valued at $10,000, consisted of 10 stations which each student visited, set up by the Canadian Tire crew. Activities included soccer-baseball, dodgeball, capture the flag, a Road to Rio-themed station and a cool-down station with a summer Olympian – Zsofia Balazs.

Their prize play day was the reward for their winning video.

“When we submitted our video, I never really thought anything would come of it. You know that feeling when you enter something, you don’t expect to win it,” said Holly Betts, a Grade 5 teacher at the school who took on the project in May.

“Canadian Tire sent out video modules that we had to watch and then put what we learned into action. A lot of them were low to no prep,” Betts explained.

She took photos and videos of students participating in activities outlined by the competition, some of which were sports that will be played in the 2016 Summer Olympics.

“They played rugby, soccer, softball and more,” she said.

When Betts found out the school won a grand prize she was completely shocked.

“I didn’t think it was real. I got word through an email so I had to get someone else to see. I tried my best to keep it a secret for as long as I could though,” she said.

“It’s an amazing experience for the kids. They were ecstatic. Some of them were even like, ‘We won this prize for just playing outside?’ It’s incredible.”

While students got to take part in different sports and activities throughout the afternoon, Tuesday, they also got the chance to meet Canadian Olympic swimmer, Balazs.

“This gives kids a chance to see we’re not just the people they see on TV. We’re just like them,” said Balazs.

Balazs, who swam the 10-km open water competition at the 2012 London Olympics, said kids today need to be more involved in sports.

“This is a huge step. Putting the fun element in is a big help. The kids don’t realize they’re working.”

As for the students, Betts thinks what they learned during the Day of Play is something they can take with them.

“They didn’t just learn about sports. They learned to be active and how to be a part of something. They learned about fitness, having fun and fair play.”
