ALBERTON

A Volunteer Rewards Program has been established in support of volunteers helping out at the hospitals and long-term care facilities in Alberton and O’Leary. Volunteer coordinator Andrew Ramsay said he is reaching out to the local business community seeking gift items as rewards for individuals who log 10 or more hours of volunteer service. Esther Saunders of Alberton received a gift bag from Alberton’s Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy. Saunders volunteers about eight hours a week at Maplewood Manor, helping out with Meals on Wheels and hairdressing. “I enjoy it. It gets me out, keeps me active. I enjoy working with the residents,” Saunders said.
Ramsay has another business ready to take over once the 10 gift bags the pharmacy has supplied are exhausted and he’s hoping to bring more businesses onboard.

“It’s good promotion for the local business, too,” Ramsay said. “They’re showing they support community involvement and volunteering.“
