The province’s Food Security and Food Education Program will help Islanders access local food and teach about its nutritional value, where it comes from and how it is produced.
The program will include a pilot project in schools to increase the amount of fresh, local food offered.
The three schools have not yet been selected since the program is still in the development stage.
A department spokesperson said the aim will be creating a province wide project, possibly with one school from each category — primary, intermediate and high school.
The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries will work with community and school organizations, education facilities, primary industries, farmers markets and other groups on initiatives that support community food security and food education projects.
