WEST POINT -- Four o’clock Saturday morning, says West Point Fire Department chief, Harvey Stewart, is when volunteers will gather at the fire hall to start preparing for the day’s P.E.I. Pond Hockey Championship.
The 34-team competition was supposed to start Friday night but with a storm rolling in, organizers decided Thursday to turn it into a one-day event.
First games are set for 10 a.m.
Fire department volunteers spent Wednesday shaping one large excavation pit into 10 mini-rinks while leaving space on the ice for the big events tent. Then the rain and mild temperatures hit, leaving volunteers wondering whether they could pull the tournament off this weekend. They simply altered the schedule.
Last year, after spending much of the winter cleaning ice only to have it repeatedly buried, volunteers were forced to cancel their 10th annual competition.
Stewart said volunteers will access competitors’ views on the one-day tournament and might look at turning it into a one-day event in the future.
Championship games Saturday are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
