Islanders will soon be able to receive emergency alerts directly on their smartphones.

The P.E.I. Emergency Measures Organization plans to roll out the new service, Alert Ready, in May and Islanders could receive their first test alert on May 9. In the meantime, Islanders may get information about the system sent to them from their mobile service carriers.

The P.E.I. Emergency Measures Organization is responsible for issuing emergency alerts in the province when there is an immediate risk to the safety of Islanders. Alerts can already be sent out on radio and TV.

“In addition to working with emergency first responders and local media, and distributing messages through our online and social media channels, Alert Ready is one more way to get the most important emergency information to Islanders when and where they need it,” said Tanya Mullally of the P.E.I. Emergency Measures Organization.

There is no cost for this service for customers.

Not all mobile devices are compatible with the system.
