CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - A P.E.I. man who drove drunk down the wrong way on a street in Charlottetown in March was sentenced to 14 days in jail on Thursday.
At around midnight on March 15, Blake James Buote, 31, of North Rustico, was pulled over by police on Queen Street after being spotted driving the wrong way on a nearby street.
While pulled over, police noticed signs of impairment, as well as alcohol in the vehicle. Buote spent the night in the provincial correctional facility. His blood alcohol reading was 160 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 mg.
Court heard that Buote had a conviction in 2014 for impaired driving.
Charlottetown provincial court judge John Douglas noted that with the previous conviction, Buote was fortunate the Crown prosecution wasn’t seeking a greater punishment. Otherwise, Buote could have been facing a mandatory minimum of 30 days in jail.
In addition to the jail term to be served on weekends, Buote received an 18-month driving ban and was placed on probation until the sentence was served.
