SEACOW POND, P.E.I. - Federal funding has been approved for major repairs to the wharf at Seacow Pond as well as for basin dredging at Seacow Pond and Miminegash.
Egmont MP Bobby Morrissey announced the funding Thursday at Seacow Pond.
As both projects are still subject to the public tendering process, exact funding amounts were not disclosed but Morrissey confirmed the two projects combined represent a multi-million-dollar investment in the safety and functionality of the two ports.
The dredging is so badly needed at Miminegash, port authority chair David Ellsworth said, that a floating dock that normally accommodates several transient boats during herring season could not even be installed this year.
At Seacow Pond, port authority vice-chair Robert McHugh plunged a steel rod down beside his boat. It seemed to go down, down, down, but when he pulled it up out of the water the last meter or more was coated in black, stinking muck.
Boats couldn’t sail through at low tide at certain times this season, Johnny Arsenault with the Port Authority noted.
Both projects are slated to start this fall. The Mimnegash project is expected to be completed by winter while the Seacow Pond project, which also consists of replacement of a section of wharf and running armour stone from the beach to the outer end of the North breakwater, is expected to be completed by the fall of 2019.
