Medyan Aldos and his family made the big move from Deraa, Syria, to P.E.I. in early January and since then, have been starting to change their way of life.

The City of Summerside hosted a meet and greet at City Hall on Tuesday, to give resients a chance to meet one of the Syrian families who are settling into community.

When the family was chosen from among the Syrian refugees to make the move to another country, they had three choices – Canada, U.S. or France.

The Aldos family chose Canada.

Aldos said the choice was easy.

“I like it very well, and I’m thankful to have a place that is offered to my family,” said Aldos.

While Aldos and his family love their new life in P.E.I., “the hardest thing was leaving my family behind in Deraa and leaving the country,” said Aldos.

The Syrian family is optimistic about what the future holds for them in Canada.

Meaghan Younker was among the local volunteers who welcomed the Aldos family with open arms and helped them get settled in their new life.

She supported the efforts to welcome the new Summerside residents with no second thoughts.

“Knowing that we have the resources and the ability and support to be able to help these families made me want to help,” said Younker.

She said the family is starting to settle in, but the biggest challenges they are facing right now is the language barrier, the cold winter climate and adjusting to their schedule.
