The Holland Hurricanes Cheer Team, which includes several local athletes, will compete alongside hundreds of other participants at the World University Cheerleading Championships, in January 2016.

The three-day event will be hosted at Walt Disney World, in Orlando, Florida.

Assistant captain Ashley Perry, Jessie Bowser, Kelsey McIsaac, Nathaly Munoz, and Breann Hastings of Summerside, have been hard at work with the Hurricanes Cheer Team (made up of 28 athletes) participating at school sporting events, fundraisers and even competed at Cheer Expo in Halifax.

Albert Roche, Director of Athletics and Recreation at Holland College, has been impressed with the growth of the team over the past two years.

“When cheer was initially discussed at Holland College there wasn't a lot of history on Prince Edward Island and this would be a first-of-its-kind collegiate team for the Island.

“However, we knew the sport was very popular elsewhere and this group has impressed everyone with their desire and training regime from the beginning,” he said. “They have established a team that thrives on challenges and the invitation to attend the championship in Florida is a testament to their abilities and is very deserving given their commitment level to the sport.”

Perry said the team has a special friendship and camaraderie.

“I have been on this team for two years now, and it's like having a family when you’re away from your own. They motivate you to do well in all aspects of life,” shared Perry. “I am excited that they picked me to be an assistant captain this year. And I am so excited for Disney World because this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Coach Andrea Berube explained why the athletes deserve to compete at this prestigious event.

“This is something they deserve to experience. Not only to compete at this competition themselves but to watch and support other teams that will be participating from all over the United States and Canada as well,” said Berube. “The team looks forward to fundraising, working hard in the gym, and making P.E.I. proud.”

Bowser shared how she felt when asked about the once-in-a-lifetime trip with the cheer team.

“I'm so excited for this experience. I was so welcomed by all the members of the team, and I love them all so much. I can't wait for the upcoming season, and especially our trip to Disney World coming up in January.”

The Hurricanes cheer team has already mapped out the year ahead. They will be in action at competitions across the country, as well as cheering for local sporting events.
