In the end, the Kensington-Intermediate Senior High (KISH) came out on top, capturing gold against Summerside Intermediate School (SIS) in P.E.I. School Athletic Association the intermediate girls AA final on Tuesday.

“We won 3-2 in the shootout. All four of our girls scored really good shots. Summerside missed their first two shots and all we had to do was score and that was it,” said KISH’s coach Blair Murphy. “We were the stronger team in the first half and Summerside, the stronger team in the second half, but we kept in it.

“It really could have gone either way. We were lucky enough to win.”

SUMMERSIDE FIRST TO SCORE

The game, played under wet and cold conditions at the Three Oaks Senior High School field, took more than two hours to complete.

Summerside was first on the board with Elly Dobson’s goal at the 10-minute mark.

KENSINGTON ANSWERS BACK

Kensington later answered back with two quick goals, the first at the 25-minute mark by Hannah LeClair, who also scored the game winner.

Two minutes later Emma Arsenault, one-time on the cross kick, scored on SIS keeper Kyrsten Coyle to give KISH the 2-1 lead heading into the second half.

Summerside’s Brianna McCardle scored early in the second half, getting one past KISH keeper Kylie MacLellan, to push the gold-medal matchup into extra time.

“Summerside had the wind for the second half and had the majority of the play, but we played pretty good defensively,” said Murphy. “Our keeper made a couple of good saves to keep us in it.”

THE SHOOTOUT

After two overtimes, the winner would be determined in a shootout.

“It was even both ways. Neither team had a lot of chances,” added Murphy. “Both teams played pretty good defensively.”

LeClair, a veteran of the KISH squad, netted the game winner, the fourth successful KISH shooter behind Ellen Cole, Ellen Murphy and Heidi Lauwerijssen.

“Hannah scored in regulation and in the shootout and did the same in the semi-final game, too,” said Murphy, adding the Grade 9 student has been a leader all season.

The intermediate girls’ gold-medal win caps off a remarkable soccer season for KISH, whose senior women’s team won gold Saturday.

The 16-player roster consists of five Grade 9s, four Grade 8s and the remainder all in their first year with the KISH squad.

“We didn’t make the crossovers last year. We lost to SIS in the quarter-final,” said Murphy, who, along with Peter Lauwerijssen, has coached the squad for two years.

“They worked hard. They totally deserved it.”

AA Boys Gold

After a scoreless first half, École Évangéline found a hole in a tough Queen Charlotte Coyotes’ defense to take the lead.

The Coyotes pressed the entire second half but strong goaltending by Julien Robichaud kept them off the board.

That was until Tshring Tamang scored in the final minute of regulation to send the game to extra time.

Then, in extra time Isaac Hendrickson scored the game winner to give Queen Charlotte their first provincial soccer title in more than a decade.

Matthew Perry was strong in goal for the winning Coyote team.

A Girls Gold

The Hernewood Huskies came out strong but were unable to capitalize early on in their chances.

The Stonepark Tigers opened the scoring with Maddy Power kicking in a rebound off a direct kick at the 18-minute mark.

Hernewood tied the game just before the half on a goal by Madeline Morrison.

Tied 1-1, the teams continued to try to end the game in the second half and overtime, but came up short.

Maci Ross, for Stonepark, and Makaylee Power, in goal for Hernewood, played well, but it Stonepark would go on to win the shootout 4-3 to capture the A girls provincial championship.

A Boys Gold

In the attack led by Gabe Inman, Reid Peardon, and Ethan McMaster — who each scored two goals — Montague came out fast, scoring two goals in the first four minutes against M.E. Callaghan, widening the gap to 4-1 at halftime.

Montague continued their strong play in the second half, scoring three more goals to win the A boys gold with a score of 7-1.

A Girls Bronze

In a low-scoring game, marked by strong goaltending from Englewood's Ella Conway and Montague's Kaydance Blaisdell, a late first half goal by Grace Connolly proved to be the difference and propelled Englewood to a provincial bronze medal.

A Boys Bronze

The Francois Buote Jaguars came out fast and furious in this bronze-medal match up against the Kensington-Intermediate Senior High squad, ending the first half with a 3-0 lead.

Francois Buote pushed the final score to 5-0 to clinch a provincial bronze medal.

Felix Theriault and Andrew Stewart scored two goals each to pace the Jaguar’s offense.

Keepers were Jordan Haslam for KISH and Raphael Duschene with the shutout for the Jaguars.

AA Boys Bronze

In a well-played, tough match up, keepers for both Hernwood Intermediate and East Wiltshre kept the game scoreless after the first half.

In the second half Hernewood took control of the game with goals by Jack Gallant and Joey Gallant, clinching provincial bronze in the AA boys division.
