CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - Joe Byrne, who has been involved with the P.E.I. NDP for more than 20 years, is set to make an announcement Thursday morning.

Byrne, who ran as a federal NDP candidate in Charlottetown in the 2011 and 2015 elections, will make the announcement at Timothys World Coffee.

Byrne did not give any specifics about the announcement, other than to say it involves the Island NDP. The provincial party announced earlier this week that is gearing up for a leadership convention to be held April 7 and will be unveiling potential leadership candidates in the coming weeks.

The Island NDP has been without a leader since Mike Redmond resigned from the post in December.
