Andrew W. Coady of Charlottetown was remembered Tuesday as an exceptional young lawyer with a promising future.

The 32-year-old associate with the law office of Cox & Palmer died while swimming  Monday at Echo Lake in Conway, New Hampshire, a member of the family told The Guardian.

According to the Conway Daily Sun newspaper, Coady was pulled from the lake by staff of Echo Lake State Park and bystanders on Monday afternoon.

Coady had been swimming when he started showing signs of distress, according to the newspaper. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered before Coady was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Calls to the Conway Police Department were not immediately returned on Tuesday but the reporter covering the story for the Conway Daily Sun told The Guardian that an autopsy has been scheduled for this morning.

Echo Lake is 16 acres in size and has a maximum depth of 10 feet.

“We are heartbroken with the news of Andrew’s untimely death,’’ said Mary Lynn Kane, managing partner with Cox & Palmer. “There are no words to capture what Andrew meant to us as a firm. He was an exceptional young lawyer with a promising future and a wonderful person.

“His loss will be a void not soon filled and we extend our deepest sympathies to his wife, Laura, and their family.’’

The law firm was closed Tuesday as friends and colleagues dealt with the news.

Coady was also active in the community, having recently signed on as honorary committee chairman for Face Off Against Cancer, an event scheduled to take place Sept. 25-27 at MacLauchlan Arena in Charlottetown. The event featuring NHL alumni raised close to $100,000 last year.

Charlottetown golfer Dave Shellington said Coady was also talented on the links. Coady was one of four Islanders who represented the province at the recent Canadian amateurs.

“He was a long driver of the golf ball and all around steady player. This is absolutely terrible news. Too young, way too young,’’ Shellington said. “Andrew was a very good golfer.’’

Coady was a member of the P.E.I. Maritime Cup golf team, the Belvedere Rosebowl golf team and, a few years ago, the UPEI golf team. He also played on numerous junior and senior hockey teams.

“He’s played in different tournaments that we’ve played in . . . he was always just a really good guy . . . someone who always had a smile on his face, was friendly with everybody, always had a moment to stop and talk to you; just an all around good guy.’’

Funeral arrangements have not been finalized. At the time of his death, Coady was representing a number of individuals with matters before the court. Another lawyer has been appointed to take over those cases.
