That was more than three years ago, and on Tuesday the 25-year-old Tays was sentenced to 10 days in jail for assault with a weapon.
Tays appeared before Judge John Douglas in provincial court in Charlottetown for sentencing after previously pleading guilty.
The court heard that on Oct. 14, 2013, Tays threw a beer bottle at a man he didn’t know who was outside a bar on Kent Street.
When the bottle hit the victim in the head, it cut him in four or five places.
Defence lawyer Thane MacEachern told the court the victim punched Tays five or six times after the assault.
Tays fled the scene and the police found him later with blood on his hands.
Instead of dealing with the matter in 2013, Tays left the province and missed a court appearance.
He only returned to P.E.I. recently and made arrangements to deal with the charges against him.
With his guilty plea, the Crown stayed a charge of failing to appear in court.
Tays addressed the court before hearing his sentence, saying the assault happened while he was younger and if he hadn’t been drunk he wouldn’t have thrown the bottle.
“If I could take it back I definitely would,” he said.
Along with the jail time, Tays will be on probation for nine months and must pay a $100 victim surcharge.
He must also provide a DNA sample for the national databank and is under a weapons prohibition.
