EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a list of some of the noteworthy incidents and investigations undertaken by Prince District RCMP between Feb. 12 and 18.

Loitering at lunch hour

On Feb. 12 around 1:30 p.m., West Prince RCMP received a request for extra patrols at the Nazarene Church in Elmsdale. Apparently, students from the high school were loitering in the parking lot during lunch hour leaving behind garbage. West Prince members were made aware of the request.

Lights taken from grave

On Feb. 12 around 2:30 p.m. East Prince RCMP received a complaint from a male stating that solar lights were stolen from his wife’s grave at the North Tryon Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Members will make extra patrols in the area. Anyone with information is asked to contact the RCMP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Fire destroys barn

On Feb. 12 around 11 p.m., West Prince RCMP received a call of a structural fire in Nail Pond. A passerby noticed a barn on fire and ran into the house to alert the residents. The fire was contained to one barn, which was completely destroyed. The fire was deemed accidental.

Driver issued warning

On Feb. 14 around 8:25 a.m., East Prince RCMP received a complaint of a car not stopping for a school bus while red lights flashing, in Crapaud. Upon investigation, it was determined that the vehicle driver did not cross the school bus red lights, however he did enter into a nearby driveway in an attempt to manoeuvre out of the way for the school bus to back up. He was issued a warning under the Provincial Highway Traffic Act for not stopping outside six metres of a school bus. 

No mistreatment of animal determined

On Feb. 14 around 8:20 a.m. East Prince RCMP received information concerning the well being of a dog in New Annan. The caller reported the dog was being kept in a vehicle all day, every day. Police visited the residence, spoke with the owner of the dog and determined the dog was in good condition and appeared to be well cared for.

Building damaged

On Feb. 14 around 5:25 p.m., West Prince RCMP were called to the parking lot of the O’Leary Farmer’s Co-op to investigate a complaint of a vehicle driving into the side of a building. Upon arrival at the scene, police noted no injuries and minimal damage to the building. The vehicle driver had mistakenly pushed on the gas pedal instead of the brake. Both parties exchanged insurance information.

Items from car stolen

On Feb. 15 around 8 a.m., East Prince RCMP received a report of theft from a vehicle while parked at a residence in St. Raphael. The theft is believed to have happened sometime through the night prior, while the caller’s vehicle was left unlocked.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding the theft or suspicious persons in the area is asked to contact the RCMP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Driver arrested for intoxication

On Feb. 15 around 8 p.m., West Prince RCMP received a report of a vehicle off the road on Route 12 in Brooklyn and the vehicle driver, a 54-year-old male, was displaying signs of intoxication. He was transported by police to the West Prince RCMP Detachment, where he provided breath samples above the legal limit. He was charged with impaired care or control of a motor vehicle and will appear in court in mid-March.

Driver loses control on icy roads

On Feb. 16 around 10:30 p.m., East Prince RCMP received a call of a single-vehicle accident on Route 124 in Urbainville. The 49-year-old driver lost control on icy roads. The vehicle crossed the centre line and rolled into the ditch, coming to rest on its roof. Both the driver and passenger were uninjured.

Snow and ice make for dangerous driving

On Feb. 17 around 1 a.m., West Prince RCMP attended the scene of a single-vehicle mishap on Route 2 in Alma. The driver, a 17-year-old male from Tignish, lost control after his vehicle hit a snowdrift and spun on the ice. Both the driver and 18-year-old passenger were checked by Island EMS and cleared. Alcohol was not a factor in this accident.

Recaps and reminders

During this past week, Prince District RCMP received 14 traffic-related complaints. These complaints mostly pertained to vehicles alleged to be driving erratically and speeding, as well as reports of traffic hazards on the roadway. RCMP will continue to conduct checkpoints and patrols throughout February in various communities across Prince District, targeting cellphone use, seat belts, distracted driving and impaired driving.
