Town passes 2018 budget

Kensington town council voted earlier this week to pass the community’s budget for 2018-2019.

This year’s budget is somewhat unusual in that it represents 15 months of spending, rather than the usual 12. This is a one-time issue to bring the community’s budget year into alignment with the province’s new Municipalities Act.

Residents will not be seeing any increases to their property taxes this year. Water and sewer rates are going up by three per cent and 1.5 per cent, respectively, but that was determined some time ago. The town is in year 4 of a five-year, pre-approved, consecutive rate increase.

The town’s total long-term debt currently stands at a little more than $3.16 million, which is down from $4.6 million in 2012.

The town is projecting operational expenses for the next 15 months to be $2,765,157, while revenues are projected to be $2,864,877.

Ad purchased from skating club

Kensington town council has approved a funding request from a local skating club.

The Kensington Skating Club had asked council to consider purchasing an advertisement in its annual ice show booklet. The show was held on March 9 at Credit Union Centre (previously Community Gardens Complex).

Council agreed to purchase the advertisement at a cost of $500.

Rural beautification donation

Kensington town council agreed to sponsor the P.E.I. Rural Beautification Society to the tune of $300.

The society holds competitions across the province annually to encourage Islanders to beautify their properties and the landscape.

Curling teams sponsored

Kensington town council will sponsor Team Schut and Team Ferguson at the male and female under-18 curling nationals, being held in St. Andrews, N.B., in April.

Council agreed to provide each team with $125.
