SUMMERSIDE – Summerside Police Services and the Community Services Department have teamed up on a new pilot program to eliminate graffiti in Summerside.
Along with the establishment of a “Graffiti Squad,” the program includes a reporting system and removal unit.
To kick off the program, a member of the city’s community services team has completed an inspection of all public spaces throughout the city.
The removal unit started to review the damages and began restoration on June 8.
Moving forward, the program will rely on reports from community members to create a work order for the removal unit.
“Despite the tremendous ongoing efforts of our green space and Police Services team to remove graffiti from public spaces, we continue to fall short,” explained JP Desrosiers, director of community services.
“The goal of this program is to get ahead of the destruction, by identifying locations that have been defaced and addressing them right away. With the help of members of the community, we feel this can be accomplished.”
Currently, the pilot program will focus on public spaces. However, if any business/building owners have been affected by vandals and would like to do something about it, they are encouraged to call the Graffiti Squad to set up a meeting to assess the damage to the property and provide advice on the best way to remove the graffiti.
