A Charlottetown man was sentenced to four months in jail after putting a former common-law partner through a violent reign of terror.

Frank William Rose, 31, pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm, uttering a death threat and breach of probation.

He received one month each for the latter two convictions, both to be served consecutively with the lengthier sentence for assault.

Rose will be on probation for 15 months and has been ordered to have no contact whatsoever with the victim.

“The charges are serious: assault causing bodily harm and the death threat,’’ said Judge John Douglas in provincial court.

“It was a domestic assault…it was on the high end.’’

The court heard Rose assaulted his former partner on three separate occasions.

The assaults included slapping the woman’s face four or five times and throwing her violently to the ground.

Rose also held a knife to the throat of his former partner and inflicted several “cat-like scratches’’ to her face.

In another violent attack, he choked the woman.

Rose also threatened to kill the victim and even urged her to take her own life.

The victim has stated she has no desire to have any contact with Rose.

The court heard that Rose was admitted to the mental health unit of the QEH on Oct. 13 where he was diagnosed with psychosis. He received anti-psychotic medication daily.

“It did take quite some time to get him under control,’’ defence lawyer Thane MacEachern said of his client, Rose.

MacEachern added that Rose is ashamed by his actions and pledges he will “be a different person.’’
