Council gives its support to sports equipment purchases

ALBERTON -- Alberton recreation committee chair Connie Bernard was all set to make a pitch for the town to fund the remaining cost of a softball pitching machine. Three girls teams had raised over $1,900 towards the purchase and were seeking support from council.

Bernard expressed her support but, before she could complete her proposal, Mayor Michael Murphy interjected.

“To make a long story short, I think that council needs to step up to the plate and get a pitching machine for the ball teams, seeing that the mothers raised the money for it. It’s as simple as that,” he said.

The actual cost of the machine along with a protective screen and a supply of balls, was estimated at $3,145 plus GST. Some electrical work will also be required to complete the project.

“I’d love to see it happen; I was just trying to figure out a way that we could save some money,” Bernard commented.

Council will seek provincial government assistance for covering its share of the project but agreed to see the project go ahead with or without the provincial government’s investment.

Council also supported a request from the Alberton Home and School for the town to cover the cost of replacing the nets on the soccer frames the H&S purchased two and a half years ago. The nets had deteriorated from use and weather, it was noted. The estimated cost for the netting is $331.16.

In her monthly report, Bernard noted the town’s new recreation director, Amanda Jendrick has been on the job since April 20 and has been busy launching regular programs and starting new ones.

New programs being introduced include Youth Drawing Club, Youth Board Game Night and a Young Writers’ Collective.

Jendrick reported that responses to an online survey on events and recreation activities for the town continue to draw responses. She indicated there has been strong interest expressed in crafting and kids day camp programming. Efforts are being made to organize a summer day camp, she reported.

Registration date for ball and soccer is May 13 at the town hall. Jendrick is looking to recruit more volunteers to help with the programs.

Canada Day activities, including a June 27 Kids Fishing Derby and a Canada Day derby, organized by the P.E.I. Bait fishers, are in the planning stages.
