The day opened with a busy pancake breakfast at the recreation centre, served up by members of the community administration. Diners not only got a chance to get acquainted with neighbours, they could also appreciate the renovations the building has received since last fall.

The afternoon was filled with activities for the kids, animated by Nicole Murphy who worked as a recreation counselor for the community in the summer of 2014.

The activities included games, hockey target practice, sleigh rides around the grounds and other outdoor activities.

The fire department also gave up-close and personal tours of some of its equipment to interested youth.

Of course, a few treats and refreshments were available, including a piñata as part of the mix.

There was an adult reception from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., before a dance with music performed by Michael Richard, Jordan LeClair, and Ben Gallant.

Community councilor Ivan Gallant explained that the community has been holding the event for the past four years. Each year it has been getting a larger response from, extending beyond the village boundaries.

“It’s a social thing. We want to meet our neighbours, whether it’s Miscouche, Summerside, St. Nicholas, Grand River, or where ever,” he said.

“We’re a thriving community, and we want to give back to our citizens,” he added.

Blanchard estimated the costs for the day at about $2,500, kept reasonable due to the volunteer effort that is offered. The breakfast served approximately 200 participants, and the afternoon activities were well organized and attended, he recounted.

The community distributed a number of door prizes during the day, including about 80 community-embossed t-shirts for adults and toques for kids, as well as hot chocolate to warm up with.

Blanchard was pleased with response to the recreation centre renovations, noting that people commented positively on the brightness of the interior and the new flooring. He also noted that the insulation had been upgraded, so in addition to being warm for activities, there should be benefit with heating costs.

“It’s paying for itself in the community,” he said of the village asset, referring to the low initial cost of transfer to the village from the previous owner organization and the fact that the province was a significant source of funds for the renovations through the Island Community Fund and the Gas Tax Fund.
