Saturday, a benefit auction will be held at Kinkora's Kanata Club in aid of the MacDonnell family.
Back in November, 36-year-old Maurean MacDonnell's life was taken at the hands of 47-year-old Rick MacLean, who then took his own life.
The brutal and senseless act left the community numb and aching to help Maurean's family - husband Steven and children Sarah, Sheamus and Megan.
"It's about the community showing the MacDonnells their support and giving back," said Maurean's friend, Donna MacLeod, one of the organizers. "It doesn't matter if it is a cake bake or a raffle, it's not about the money; it's just to show Steve that the community supports him."
The MacDonnells moved to Kinkora more than three years ago, after Steven, an RCMP officer, was posted with the East Prince detachment.
The family knew no one in the small, picturesque community. That soon changed.
"We were there with a tray of sandwiches to welcome them and I think they felt it (the support)," said Andrea Boyle, who was a neighbour and friend of Maurean's. "We will continue to be there for the rest of their lives, as long as they are around."
Maurean volunteered with the toast program at Somerset Elementary, taught Sunday school, took notes during Home and School Association meetings, served coffee following funerals, and offered her help, along with her warm smile, whenever she could, often without being asked.
"They've just given back so much," said MacLeod. "This is a way for us to rally together as a church, a school, neigbours and neighbouring communities, to give back to Steve and the kids who are left behind."
Boyle added, "She (Maurean) was such an integral part of the community - there for such a short time but gave so much of herself that we're really hurting. This is the only way we feel we can help out."
Steven has not spoke publicly about the tragedy.
"They're coping day to day and he's getting through it," said MacLeod.
MacLeod and Boyle have been taken aback by the overwhelming support received for Saturday's fundraiser, which includes a live auction, silent auction, cake bake sale, 50/50 draw and various other activities.
Countless businesses and individuals have donated items. Even Sheamus' favourite hockey team, the Detroit Red Wings, sent an autographed picture of left-winger Tomas Hölmstrom for the auction.
"He's such a fan. Maurean had talked about... doing his room over. After she passed away, community members came together and did his room over with the Detroit Red Wings logo on the wall, got him a bedskirt, did everything Detroit Red Wings," said Boyle, who contacted the Red Wings organization, telling them Sheamus' story. "Within a day I had a response from them. It sent chills down my back."
The team also sent a package filled to the brim for Sheamus.
"He had big smiles," added Boyle.
Almost 300 items are up for auction, including an autographed photo of Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf, golf passes, weekend getaways, handmade quilts, leather jackets and lobster.
The event is 19 and over and starts at 7 p.m. Storm date is Sunday, March 4, at the same location and time.
