Community gives big in support of murder victims' families

A community effort to raise money for the family of two men who were murdered near Montague last month is far surpassing the organizers’ goal of $10,000.

Ambyr MacDonald, owner of Red’s Corner in Pooles Corner, set up a silent auction on Facebook to raise money for the family and said the community’s response has been overwhelming.

“Every day, humanity is restored for me type of thing,” she said.

On Aug. 20, Kings District RCMP found Brent McGuigan, 68, and his son, Brendon McGuigan, 39, dead in Brent’s home on St. Mary’s Road.

Brendon and his wife, Kimberly, have three children with a fourth on the way.

Alfred Guy Vuozzo, 46, has since been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and his next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 9.

MacDonald said she has known the McGuigan family for a long time and started by planning to hold a fundraising dance at her restaurant, but decided to try to earn a little more money with the silent auction.

She sent out an open invitation for donations and said she got an immediate response from people offering items to sell.

“It’s sort of become a community project,” she said.

Lobster, gift cards, a civil wedding ceremony, a chimney top, a pedicure, jewelry, photo sessions, topsoil, a curling membership, golf rounds, yoga classes, acupuncture treatment and wrestling tickets are some of the many items up for auction.

MacDonald said sometimes it’s tough living in a small town, but after what happened the community has come together to help the family.

“It’s been pretty emotional.”

When she started to plan the fundraiser, MacDonald had a goal of raising $10,000 between the auction and a dance.

She said as of Wednesday the bids in the auction totalled more than $14,000.

“It’s gonna be pretty big.”

The auction closes Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. with a dance planned for Sept. 20 at Red’s Corner.

Anyone who wants to bid on any of the items can do so on the “McGuigan family fundraiser — online silent auction” Facebook event.

MacDonald, who has had Pamela Martin helping with the auction, will have a tally ready at the Sept. 20 dance.

Anyone who wants to make a donation to the family can also do so at Scotiabank where an account has been set up in Kimberly’s name.
