SUMMERSIDE – The City of Summerside looked a little neater after citizens and organizations answered a call for Community Spring Cleanup volunteers.

“Spring is here. Let’s get our community looking good,” bid the city horticulturist, Trent Williams.

This is the fifth year that the city has sponsored such a cleanup call, intending it to build awareness of the amount of litter and other items that collect on fields and in ditches around the city over the winter.

Williams recognizes and praises the efforts of volunteers who clean up their own neighbourhoods and appreciated the response to tackling public areas and roadsides that don’t border a lot of occupied properties.

"City staff do an awesome job," he said, but they can't be everywhere right away.

The two-hour event, on Saturday morning, helped clear the Canada Games fields and other areas around Credit Union Place, the ditches along Greenwood Drive, and other locales the volunteers identified as needing tending, such as along the Confederation Trail near roadway crossing zones.

“We hope it promotes groups and individuals to clean up,” Williams said, citing the Boys and Girls Club Cleanup crew as one that has regularly participated.

“As a community event, it’s nice to have kids and students involved,” he said.

Organizers provided refreshments and barbequed meats as nourishment for participants.

Williams would like to hold the event in conjunction with Earth Day in April, but remaining snow is often a factor preventing access to where the litter ends up. The early-May date does coordinate with the Women’s Institute Island-wide Roadside Cleanup, which happens this year on May 23.

Williams acknowledges that the small Community Spring Cleanup won’t address all the litter problems around the city, but awareness might help prevent some of them in the future.

Any individuals, families, or groups wanting to help continue to keep Summerside clean can arrange free bags and identify target areas by contacting Williams at 902-432-4963.
