In Summerside provincial court Tuesday, Darcy Robert Gray, 23, was sentenced to serve 90 days behind bars for what Judge Jeff Lantz called crime that was a breach of his uncle’s trust.
The incident happened sometime over the May long weekend.
The homeowner, Gray’s uncle, came home to find that his New Annan house had been burglarized, with a basement window smashed and entry gained through a damaged patio door.
A neighbour had witnessed three males, all on bicycles, at the home. She lost sight of them for about 45 minutes before she saw two of the men leave on bicycles and the third later leave in a taxi.
The taxi driver later told police that man was Gray. He picked him up and dropped him off, with a flat screen television, at a city pawnshop.
The television, which has been sold for $80, was recovered and returned to the owner. None of the other items, including $4,274 in jewelry, have been recovered.
Damage to the home was more than $3,000.
The homeowner’s insurance has since covered $5,784 in losses.
Gray, upon his arrest, admitted to the crime, telling police it was fuelled by drug addiction. He had no previous record.
Judge Jeff Lantz, in sentencing Gray to the 90-day sentenced, ordered Gray and any co-accused to pay $5,784 to P.E.I. Mutual and $2,305 to the homeowner.
Gray will be on probation for 24 months, during which time he must undergo assessment counselling and treatment.
