CAPE WOLFE – A Department of Fisheries and Oceans official confirmed Monday that the whale carcass that washed ashore in Cape Wolfe on the weekend is a minke.

Unlike the right whale, another type of baleen whale, the minke whale is not considered an endangered species.

Several endangered right whales have been found dead in the Gulf of St. Lawrence this year.

The minke found Sunday is approximately 10 meters in length. Because the whale was found on shore, responsibility for its disposal rests with the provincial government.
