“John, I see your marks aren’t where they could be,” said Hall, after calling MacDonald into an empty classroom at Athena Regional High School.

“Mr. Hall, do you want me to have a certain average,” he asked.

“That would be great,” answered the young principal.

MacDonald wrote exams that Easter in the mid-1960s, and Hall called him back in to thank him for improving his grades.

“I always thought that was a positive thing in my life for him to do that. I took that and grew with it,” said MacDonald.

He, along with other 1966 graduates, and Hall, reunited to reminisce and get caught up at the school’s 50-year reunion Saturday evening.

They met at the Loyalist Lakeview Resort, with some coming from across Canada. The room was filled with nostalgic conversation and laughter, as well as their high school memorabilia including photos, class rings, and Athena-related newspaper articles.

MacDonald was on the planning committee, and said the large turnout reflects the enthusiasm of former classmates being eager to come together.

“It’s wonderful after this many years to get reintroduced to each other,” he said. “A lot of people haven’t had the chance to see each other since graduation.”

In addition, a slideshow showed everyone’s grad photos and an update of what they’re doing now, as well a memorial table paid tribute to the late students from 1966.

“Everyone is really enjoying the comradeship. It’s the good ol’ ‘60s group of Baby Boomers,” laughed MacDonald.

Hall said this is his second 50-year reunion in the last few years, attributing that to him being in his early twenties when he was principal.

“It forces one to look back on the past and usually the things you remember are very positive.

“Some are long-term friends,” he said, looking around the room. “I was almost in the same age group as the students.”

Hall was involved with Athena Regional High School from the initial stages when it was built in 1962.

After graduation, people scatter to different parts of the country, he added.

“The group is very nostalgic. It’s an opportunity to see people you haven’t seen in 50 years.”
