An American man living in Kensington illegally has been sentenced to serve 90 days in jail in Canada before he is deported back to the United States.

Eric Michael Bartell, 47, of Delaware, pleaded guilty on Thursday of failing to appear for an examination as required by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and for being in Canada again after having been deported.

Bartell had been living in Kensington but was arrested and deported in March of this year. He then got back into Canada without going through an official border crossing. He was picked up again on April 14.

The court heard that Bartell couldn’t legally enter Canada because of previous criminal convictions there.

Bartell was sentenced to 90 days, but received credit for the equivalent of 39 days he had already spent in custody since his most recent arrest. He will be deported once he has served his sentence on P.E.I.
