Residents helped cut the ribbon to officially open a new $4-million housing complex for low-income seniors on Frank Mellish Street, near Prince County Hospital, on Monday.

Shirley MacIsaac has all the comforts of home in her new apartment.

The long-time O’Leary resident even brought along her piano when she moved into the O’Leary Housing Project in February.

Following the official opening of the six-unit senior housing complex on Stewart Lane on Monday, MacIsaac played a tune on the piano for National Revenue Minister Gail Shea.

“I was glad when I got the word I could live here,” MacIsaac confided.

It’s not that she didn’t like her previous apartment, it’s just that this one is smaller and easier for her to look after in the face of health issues, she explained.

The new complex was built by Easy Living Properties, a new company owned by Stewart and Norma MacDonald of O’Leary. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation provided $270,000 in Affordable Housing Trust capital funding for the project.

The MacDonalds broke ground last May, and the 5,600-square-foot facility was ready for occupancy by the end of January. The complex has geothermal heat and in-floor heating.

The property consists of four one-bedroom units and two two-bedroom units, which includes two barrier-free designs. Seven residents occupy the six units.

The new units represent a 25 per cent increase in the number of subsidized seniors housing units now available in O’Leary.
