Seventy-year-old woman jailed for impaired driving

SUMMERSIDE  - A 70-year-old Summerside woman was sentenced to five days in jail after pleading guilty in Summerside provincial court Thursday to a charge of impaired driving.


Mary Joan Gallant was stopped on Water Street after Summerside received a complaint of an impaired driver.

A breathalyzer demand was made and Gallant recoding two readings of 170.

In handing down the sentence Judge Jeff Lantz noted that the readings were above the aggravating limit of 160 contained in the Criminal Code of Canada.

In addition to the jail term, Gallant was fined $1,300 and ordered to pay a victim fine surcharge of $390.

Gallant also lost her driving privileges for 12 months.
