SUMMERSIDE – A power outage that extended to Summerside from the Borden-Carleton transmission line of Maritime Electric caused some nervous moments for drivers heading home from work.

Traffic was bumper to bumper all along Water Street as motorists cautiously crossed intersection after intersection, making their way in and out of the city. All of the traffic lights along the main access and egress route to Summerside were out. Other than very slow going, no major incidents were reported.

A spokesperson for Maritime Electric said the company is investigating the cause of the power outage.

“I spoke to energy control and there are people working on the transmission line from Borden to Sherbrooke,” a Maritime Electric spokesperson said. “They were reconfiguring the line and the line tripped and that’s what caused the outage in Summerside. Right now we don’t know what caused it and we are investigating it.”
