SUMMERSIDE – A Summerside doctor has been handed a reprimand by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island.

In a press release posted on its website Thursday, the College stated that Dr. Douglas Carmody, an internist at the Summerside Medical Centre, had been reprimanded by its Fitness to Practise Committee.

It does not detail why Carmody was reprimanded, saying only that he “failed to meet the standard of care expected of a physician.”

The reprimand does not affect his ability to practise medicine in any way, but did require that he forward a letter of apology to the affected patient and pay a fine of $3,000.

The reprimand was issued Jan. 1, 2014, however, it was only posted online on March 5.

The Journal Pioneer requested more specific information related to the nature of the offence from the College but was told that nothing further would be provided.

Attempts were also made to contact Dr. Carmody for comment, however, his office reported that he is traveling outside the province for the next several days and would be difficult to contact.
