ELMSDALE — The Go!pei veggie box program has started delivering its boxes of fresh fruit and vegetables to designated pickup points.
The program is running in conjunction with farmers, Barry Clohossey of Clohossey Farms in Nail Pond and Jason Matthews of JL Farms in Richmond.
Pickups happen on Thursday between 5 to 6 p.m. in the Westisle school parking lot in Elmsdale and in the rink parking lot in Richmond.
With fruit and vegetables ripening and ready for harvest, new items will be added as the season progresses.
Picking up her veggie box, Jamie Martin of Cascumpec remarked, “I’m looking forward to getting some beet greens soon. I love those.”
A full box costs $20. Half-boxes are also available at the Elmsdale location only. They contain food for a family of four to six people.
Program co-ordinator for the West Prince area, Alison Griffin, is delighted with the response from consumers.
“I’ve been getting some really great feedback about the quality of the product,” she said.
While the Richmond area has achieved their goal of 24 boxes for the launch of the program, the Elmsdale area still has a few boxes available. Clohossey is unconcerned. He feels they will reach their goal of 15 boxes once more people hear how easily they can obtain fresh Island produce at a reasonable price.
